Procedures to be followed by international students who wish to take part in hospital medical competitions in France.

Access to postgraduate medical studies

Students and doctors who are nationals of the European Union, the European Economic Area, the Swiss Confederation, the Principality of Andorra, can register for the computerised national grading tests (ECNi) and continue their studies in France.

Medical residency as foreign national

The ETR competition is only open to foreign nationals OUTSIDE the European Union, European Economic Area, Swiss Confederation, Principality of Andorra.

This competition is open to candidates who hold a medical diploma enabling them to practise medicine in their country of origin.

Candidates apply for a diploma of specialized studies (DES) and receive full-time training. The diploma obtained does not entitle the holder to obtain the French State diploma of doctor of medicine or to practise medicine in France.

The competition is managed by the National Centre for the Management of Hospital Practitioners.

State diploma of doctor in medicine

Foreign nationals can obtain the state diploma allowing them to practice medicine in France. They must pass the competitive examination at the end of the first year of health studies and be classified in a "useful rank" in the medical field, whether they are :

  • holders of a medical diploma in their country of origin
  • pursuing medical studies in their home country
  • holders of a foreign high school diploma.

Licensing procedure (PAE)

Doctors, dental surgeons, midwives and pharmacists who are foreign nationals OUTSIDE the European Union, European Economic Area can apply for authorisation to practice in France.
